Franklin escapes punishment by winning election to Congress but refuses to swear loyalty to Franklin, then gets arrested and forced to surrender to authorities. As a result, Franklin begins being held in solitary confinement.

As an act of rebellion, the entire state of North Carolina secedes, and the rest of the Carolinas secede from the Union. On October 9, 1864, the nation's third party emerged from the Revolutionary War in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and officially formed its political status in the state. The next year, the new party won election to the House of Representatives and became a majority party in the General Assembly of the Confederacy.

In the House of Representatives, Republican and Democratic members from all regions of the state, as well as New England and Southern Pennsylvania, joined the new party.

In the North Carolina House of Representatives, Republicans held a majority for nearly twenty years after gaining a majority in the General Assembly. It was in 1881 that the legislature passed the first bill to allow political parties to form. The legislation had been in place since 1817 and had the effect of excluding political parties from membership in the General Assembly and thereby limiting their ability to participate in politics.

During the Democratic primary for governor of North Carolina in 1884, Charles M. Brown Jr. became the first black to be nominated for the office. His election marked the beginning of a shift in North Carolina from Democrat-controlled North Carolina to Republican-controlled North Carolina.

Daughter found at home in tears after father died

A man who was believed to have died on the night of his sister's wedding has been identified as her father.

Police were called to a home in Northumberland Road in Blackpool late on Saturday night after a caller said she had been raped.

Officers found the man who has been named locally as Patrick Brown, 53, a locksmith from Blackpool.

His body was flown to a police station in Londonderry where his daughter, 16, was found with an injury. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition and later died.

Daughter, 16, has been taken to hospital to deal with injuries suffered in her father's house, which is understood to have been an all-male unit.

The woman, from Blackpool, was married to Mr Brown, the council said in a statement.

His wife is thought to be in a stable condition.

Mrs Brown has two brothers and has a nine-year-old daughter with her husband.

On Sunday evening her father, father of the day Patrick Brown, attended church in Whitehall, Northumberland, the BBC understands.

Barry Brown, his partner of 26 years, and Mr Brown's mother are understood to have attended church together for five days.

She was described by friends and family as "a loving, soft-spoken person who was always smiling and never crying".

Neighbours described her as a loner who moved in with her parents about six months ago but then left home, leaving her with her boyfriend at a house near St Albans.

The couple, both from the Blackpool-Chesterfield area, were both known to neighbours for their charitable work.

Another relative, who was visiting them when Mrs Brown's husband died, said it was a'very tragic time' and Mrs Brown was 'quiet and never cried'.

Diana Williams, 22, said: "She just seemed like such a nice person and really good at doing nice things.

"She was such a sweet girl. A lot of the neighbours don't know who her father is, but she really did help a lot with children with cancer when she saw them, so they're really glad that she's alive and well."

Mr Brown started work at Blackpool Lockers in February 1987 and became a locksmith there in 2011.

It is understood that over the past decade Mr Brown had been married four times, but never before to a woman.

He moved to Londonderry in 1995.

She also worked as a nanny in a child welfare centre and
